Tonight’s class was a good opportunity to get to hear about everyone’s Alternative Breaks. It was nice to get to hear more about different locations that fellow breakers went on. My favorite part was getting to hear the excitement when individuals talked about the people they got to help. The group that struck me the most was the TX group that helped individuals that had mental disabilities. I enjoyed how they had pictures of the people they worked with, and also had nice short stories about each person. This really showed how they truly connected with the people they were helping. The group also had a lot of excitement when they got to tell us about the two men that were best friends. It was wonderful to hear about how these men had each other, and how they had someone that truly cared about one another. All of the groups did a very good job presenting what all they learned, and got to do. It was also great to see my group, and just catch up.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that the last class ended with each group's individual presentations of their trips. It was so good to hear that everyone had such a great time. It also was a great opportunity for me to hear about future perspective Alternative Breaks I would like to go on. For example, Zion's presentation totally sold me! I would probably pass on climbing that mountain with only chains protecting you, but it looked like a ton of fun and a very beautiful place. Another presentation that stuck out to me was the Rebuilding New Orleans group. It was very depressing to hear that the people who had been through so much and already lost their homes in a hurricane then they rebuilt a new home had to knock it down and start all over again. Just because they were provided with faulty building materials the first time. Not only that, but once the residents saw the money from the insurance companies to rebuild their houses, they paid faulty contractors who took all of their money. It actually makes me sick to my stomach to know that a human being would do that to another. I was also so thankful to see my group again! It has been weird the past five days not to be able to see them at all! We are also going to do the Big Event as a group tomorrow! I can’t wait!
ReplyDeleteTonight’s class was definitely my favorite of all. Everyone was so upbeat and happy about their trips, and seeing what everyone else did was such an interesting way to spend the class. I had not realized till this class about how diverse all the trips really were. My favorite group presentation was the Zion National Park group. They were so energetic! You could really tell they all had a great time, and had really positive attitudes throughout the trip. On my trip, personally, I came across many things I had not initially expected, and it was nice to see that others felt the same way too. I also loved how when everyone returned from their breaks, the class seemed so much more lively! Everyone was buzzing about what they had done and telling stories to one another. I found myself missing my site group members a little throughout the week, it was weird having not seen them in five or six days after the intense week we all spent together. Overall, I just loved the infectious positivity of this week’s class. Everyone really seemed to enjoy themselves. It made me so glad I decided to do an alternative break this year!
ReplyDeleteIt was so neat to hear about everyone's experiences. It some cases, you could see the group dynamics had changed greatly. My favorite part was watching everyone walk you, it was like a class reunion and you could see people hugging and laughing with each other. I really enjoyed having each group talk about what they felt were the most important parts of the trip. I especially liked looking at Zion's photos of the hike - how intense! It is so different to report on what you are going to do, and then be able to report on what you actually did and how it affected you. My perspective has not made huge leaps and bounds (since I was pro-gay rights anyway) but it has opened my eyes to see how many more struggles they face in their community and the perception of the world. It was definitely a great experience, I wish I wasn't graduating so I could go on more in the future.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed going to the last meeting of the year because this time I was coming to meet with 5 new close friends. It was the least awkward of the meetings and we were all excited to share what we had been up to since we were away from one another for 4 days. We all were excited to see one another and was no longer like we were at a meeting with strangers. One of my group members even made everyone a CD with all the songs we had listened to on the trip. Listening to that CD in my car brings back all the good memories that I had on the trip, and I had to keep myself from crying because this break was truly one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my life. It was really interesting to see what all the other groups had done. It was great to know that there were so many other groups doing an equal amount of awesome work all around the country. Also we won the PR competition, so that was like super neat. One of my favorite groups to hear about was the farm trip that was in Austin I believe. I hope I get another opportunity to participate in an Alternative Break again.
