  1. Hello everyone my name is Pierre and I'll be a Senior next semester. I was born in San Francisco, California but spent most of my life growing up in Columbus, Ohio. I moved to Lawrence 3 years ago to come to KU to get a major in American Studies and a minor in Leadership Studies. Over Spring break, I'll be going to Chicago for Teach for America with 10 really cool people that I met for the first time last night. I'm really excited and I can't wait to get to know the group better and to learn more details about our trip.

  2. Hello, my name is Mariah Riling I am an English major and this is technically my fifth year of school. I was born and raised in Lawrence. Between my first and second year of college I took a year off to participate in Americorps. I worked for the American Red Cross in Santa Barbara, California focusing on disaster relief and preparedness. Since returning home to Lawrence I have continued my work with the Red Cross. This is my first year doing Alternative Breaks and I am very excited. I will be going to New Orleans and to be honest I am not exactly sure what I will be doing there but I am looking forward to the experience. I am also very excited to look at volunteerism through course work. I think it will make this experience unique from my time in Americorps. I am also very excited to get to know all the members of my group I think everyone seems really nice and fun.

  3. Hey everyone! My name is Kelsey Coleman. I am from Eudora, KS and lived there my entire life until I graduated from high school.I am a junior at KU majoring in Applied Behavioral Science, my concentration is Early Autism Intervention. I am currently in my practicum where I am working hands on with the children, I am hoping to implicate what I learn on my trip next year when I do another practicum and in my career later. This is my first time doing Alternative Breaks, however I have been looking into the summer sites and am VERY interested in applying again. I was super excited to meet my group, who are all amazing!I am going on the trip to Colorado to the Autism Society, which fits my passion perfectly! When I graduate I want to work individually to preform Autism interventions to young children. This class is important to me because I am also a part of KU'S only service sorority, Omega Phi Alpha, where we focus on all types of community service. My goal in my personal life is to change at least one person's life. I belive that all people have the right to be happy and enjoy life, and I love to make that happen for people. I am so excited to spend this semester in class with everyone and to spend my spring break doing such a positive thing!

  4. Hey all, my name is Jack Xu. I'm from Fayetteville, AR but was originally born in Annapolis, MD. I am currently a senior biochemistry major and will be spending my spring break in Chicago with Teach for America. I'm really excited about this trip because I have never been to Chicago and I really like to teach. I've had a lot of experience teaching and helping out with the community so I hope I can use these experiences to help out our group contribute as much as possible in one week! I've done one of these spring break opportunities before with Engineers WIthout Borders-KU chapter in 2010 when we went down to New Orleans to help out with residents still living in horrific conditions from Hurricane Katrina's damage. It was shocking how much damage there still was 5 years after the Hurricane. We had an amazing time since we were able to make significant contributions to some of the houses and the residents were very grateful for our help. Our group was able to get along very well and I still talk to some of them today! I'm sure that my experience this upcoming spring break will be just as fun and gratifying!

    3. Clearly I can't figure out how to reply to this entire thread so I'll be replying to Jack's post :)

Hi! My name is Lisa Wojcehowicz. I am from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I am a sophomore at KU majoring in Strategic Communications in the School of Journalism. I will be working in the Urban Gardening at the Mid South Center for Peace and Justice in Memphis, Tennessee. In high school and over breaks I worked in a garden store with outdoor and indoor plants, depending on the season for the past four years. I am pretty familiar with plants and have enjoyed gardening since I was a little kid so I am excited to be working with urban gardens for my Alternative Break. I am also very excited to interact more with my group as the weeks go on and can't wait for our break!

  6. Aloha, Bonjour, or as we say in English, what's up? The name's Yager, Kirk Yager. No, I am not a huge James Bond fan, but I figured in order to get a good review, I must be humorous with this and future blogs. I am from Lawrence, and I am a sophomore at The University of Kansas. I am majoring in Journalism, and I am a member of Student Union Activities. One of the great things about being an SUA member is that I get to meet some famous celebrities (not A-listers, like Brad Pitt or George Clooney,) but rather some lesser-known people who are still very talented (including Andy Dick). I am going to Lakeview, Colorado to do the study on Autism. I chose this site (slkdjfalksdfjl;saj)... oh sorry about that. My hands are starting to cramp, so I have to type with my nose. hdjk.. Okay, that's not going to work, so I'll resume typing with my sore hands. Anyways, I chose the Autism study because I have a form of Autism called Asperger's Syndrome, and this means that my social skills are limited. I know a lot about the subject, and I will certainly enjoy this class. Well, I better get going before my hands off, thereby preventing me from writing anymore blogs. I can't wait to get this program started, and this is Kirk Yager saying good night and big balls.

  7. Hey all! My name is Kristen Fisher and I am a sophomore here at KU! I was born and raised a Jayhawk by my father, while my mom just had to let it happen ( she's a mizzou alum)!! I am an Exercise Science major for now, but will continue my schooling at KU MED (hopefully) to become a physical therapist! Haven't decided yet but I would like to either focus on pediatrics or geriatrics! I'm from Louisburg Kansas, which is only about 50 minutes away but thankfully its far enough away!! We are famous for our awesome apple cider which i would def try but its not worth it to go there! The break I was selected to go on is the Joplin break to help rebuild. I am very excited to go and help out but I'm also kind of hesitant to see all the damage that was done! A tornado did hit my hometown the day before the tornado's hit Joplin, and I thank everyday that it did not hit our town as bad as it hit Joplin! I can't wait to go!!
