Welcome to the Winter AB Blog!
Hello, Breakers!
This week we would like you to create an account and post with your name, year, hometown, major, and site. Can't wait to discuss these issues with you this semester.
Hi everyone! My name is Julia and I am a senior from Lawrence, KS. I am one of the AB Co-Directors and I'm so excited to get started! I'm a History major and since I'm not going on a Winter Break, I'll just tell you that my favorite break ever was two summers ago to the Catalina Island Environmental Leadership Program.
My name is Stephanie, and I'm also a senior for Lawrence, KS. I'm a Cognitive Psychology major and Pre-Optometry student. I'm the other Alternative Breaks Co-Director, and I was so excited to see all of the participants! Selection was really hard for us this year because it was so competitive, but I know that we selected the best of the best to represent KU and Alternative Breaks!
Thanks to all of you for participating in this class. It's going to be so wonderful!
Hi! I'm Hannah, a sophomore from Andover, KS. I'm one of the Site Leaders for the Fifty Forward break in Nashville, TN! I'm also the Fall and one of the Summer Coordinators on Alternative Breaks core this year. I'm majoring in Journalism (Strategic Communication) and Psychology.
Hey everybody! My name is Jana Stuhr and I am a sophomore from Topeka, Ks. I am majoring in Organismal Biology with a pre-veterinary interest. I am going on the Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary alternative winter break. I have been on one Alternative Break before and had a blast! I chose the Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary Alternative Break, because I love animals. I have had dogs and cats my entire life and wouldn’t know what to do without them. I work at a veterinary hospital in my hometown every Sunday. Working there gives me the chance to get hands on experience with what I want to do as my career, and allows me to see my boxer Roxie every week who I probably miss more than my parents when I am at school. At school I live in Douthart Scholarship Hall and that is how I first heard about the Alternative Breaks program. Melanie who was a co-coordinator talked to my hall about what Alternative Breaks was about and why we should get involved. I was struck by how unique this program is and the opportunities that it affords KU students. We get the opportunity to travel to different parts of the country and really delve into the many pressing issues that are facing our country today. After my first Alternative Break rebuilding houses in Galveston, Tx I knew that this program was something that I wanted to be a part of every year. Going down to Galveston and volunteering made me really think. Here I was stressing about my next test and complaining about not having the type of chips I like at my hall, while the people effected by Hurricane Ike from 2008, were still struggling with repairing their houses. The experience really put into perspective what is important in life. This is why the Alternative Breaks organization is such an important program to have on campus, and I am really grateful to be a part of it. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone during the Alternative Breaks winter classes!
